Buddy,

A virus can enter into your system 4 different ways.I think you should be aware of that if you are a frequent user.

1. Usually, Attachment is the best source of Virus.Even if the attachement is thoruoghly scanned ,there is also a great possibility of getting Virus. Attachment can be of hidden type, I can be Zip, or a rar file.

2. As a HTML embedded code. The virus can be embedded to the HTML codes.By Dynamic HTML it provides more flexibility to this opertunity. The basic reason is the use of Scripting languages like VB scrips, Java Scrips etc. If the Page contains only, HTML tags, Dont worry, It dont have a virus.

3. Via external links. You might may open some links which may come through the e-mail.Clicking it may even bring Virus without any notice.

4. Can U imagine that even Images can bring Virus.Beleive us. Our team has done a Steganograhic project which was capable to carry programs with an image. A software which is capable of Identifying the image is installed before that(It can be Virus,A wallpaper,Screen Saver etc.)

(The earlier version of E-mail during early 90's used 7' bit ASCII format so it wasnt a matter to be cared of a Virus)

No, one has to open the attachment and then scan for virusues. Without doing this you cant get rid of viruses in an email. Usually the mails which are more than 23k are virus mails and anyway while attaching a file in rediff files are automatically scanned for viruses and then it is notified.

No you need to open the attachment. But thats not thte only way. Even in outlook you can be infected by a script in the message. The page is designed to download files &install automatically. If your settings are not right you are in trouble. These things are mostly taken care of by the good guys in MS & other places though :)

The best bet is to never open a n email with an atttachment next to it, until you are totally convinced that the email is safe.

Remember even if the email has been sent by a friend, it is not sure that your friend knows about it, as it can also be a worm.

Unfortunately some viruses can be caught just by going online and cruising the net. Protect yourself with a good virus program like Agrisoft's AVG, it performs better than most.

Basically, a virus is code, being a program it must consist of some code or other. Ordinary emails cannot have active code in themselves and so a Javascript control or external attachment must be opened in order to allow your PC to become infected.

yes, most of them, you open attachment, same as open some web site, they install active x exe file in your machine without you knowing it. But for email, reading plain txt file without opening attachment wont hurt!

they can be written in html and no attachment open is needed, just like some web sites infect you by merely visiting them. unless you have the right tools malware is always one wrong click away. if you use web based mail, it's not as likely as using outlook.
