downloading means data transfer from a remote webserver to your computer.
and uploading meand transfer of data from your computer to a webserver.
for eg.
when you answer questions here. firstly you click a link.
the browser requests the page from the webserver. the server accepts the request and provides you the page. this transfer of data from a website to your comp. is known as downloading.
now when the question page has opened, you click on 'answer this question' to answer a question and type your message.when you click preview and submit the text you have written in the text box gets transferred from your computer to the yahoo server. this comes in uploading data.
so similarly whan you chat, email, and answer questions you both upload and download data.
go it.

Uploading and downloading are related terms used to describe the transfer of electronic data between two computers or similar systems. Their primary usage is as a verb: to upload is to send data from a local system to some remote system, such as a website, File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server, or other similar systems. To download is to receive data from a remote system.
In general use, the terms do not refer to the basic communication required for the operation of the software including connecting to an FTP server or requesting and receiving data displayed in a web browser. Instead, they are reserved for the specific and intentional act of transferring a file.
By extension, the terms can be used as nouns. In this context, an upload is any file that has been uploaded, particularly if it is awaiting the recipient's attention. A download is any file that is offered for downloading or that has been downloaded.
Similar, but less commonly used, the transfer of data from one remote computer to another is called sideloading.

Downloading is taking something OFF the internet. Uploading is putting something ON the internet. Uploading would be if you had a bunch of photos you wanted to add to your webpage. You would have to upload them off your computer and onto the net. Downloading would be if you took a program off of download.com and installed it onto your computer.
