Do you add clothes while the washer is filling or do you wait until it's filled and beginning to agitate? Why?

I first start filling the washer, then add the detergent, let it mix for a while (i do this with both liquid and powdered detergent), then add the clothes as it continues to fill. I know how much the washer will hold, so i don't overload it.

Why? It works, it keeps down the soap streaking, and it takes less time than waiting until the washer is filled.

The instructions always say to fill then add detergent then add clothes. This helps prevent bleach spots.

I normally do the opposite though. I add the clothes first because I like checking for stains before I put the clothes in so I can treat the stains before putting them in. Once the stain reaches the dryer, it's too late. For stain treater I just dilute the detergent down with water and add it to a little squeeze bottle then squeeze it out of the bottle onto any stains. A toothbrush works great for brushing it into the stains. After I have all the clothes in, then I start filling the washer. I pour my detergent into a large cup then allow the water from the washer to pour into the cup until it is overflowing, diluting the detergent before it actually hits the clothes so I don't get bleached spots. I normally add fabric softener to help prevent static cling and wrinkles.

I always wash reddish colored clothing separately by itself the first time I wash it.

I put the clothes in while the washer if filling...I let some water in, then add the soap...let more water in so that the soap dissolves, and then add my clothes when it is about 3/4 full.

That's just the way I've always done it, it's probably cause I don't want to stand there and wait for it to fill all the way. So I guess the reason is impatience.

If you are using bleach, always add it to the water first and wait for the washer to agitate for a few minutes before adding the clothes. Otherwise, you will get bleach spots on the clothes. For other washes, it doesn't matter.

The directions on my detergent (liquid Gain) say "as washer fills, add Gain, then add clothes." That is the way I do it. I also stick the cap under the running water and rinse it out after I have added the detergent, I don't like to waste any and also it prevents the detergent bottle from getting all sticky.

I don't know what is the "proper" way, but I add mine as the water is filling. I hate having to stick my hand down to push the clothes into the water, especially if it's hot. It's easier to see how many clothes can fit too. However, one exception to my way is when I bleach. In that case I let it fill and then add the clothes, being very careful.

Oh, it all depends on my mood and how whimsical I feel that particular day. If I'm really feeling daring I'll wash a red shirt in with the whites. Or perhaps add a crayon to the dryer. And maybe even put a few oz. of bleach with the darks and see what spots up! Oh laundry can be such fun! It all depends on how crative you want to be. Add the clothes before the water, after the water, while it's filling...oh so many choices.....

I add clothes as the washer is filling, otherwise they wont get the full time of agitation to get them clean.

I add the clothes while the water is filling. I don't know why, I just prefer to do it that way. My boyfriend will put the clothes in before he even puts in the detergant or starts the water. It drives me crazy, so I dont let him to the laundry. I guess I'm just particular...
