You're in 1st gear whent he car is at a complete stop. As you accelerate, listen for the change in your car's engine sounds that let you know it's "working harder." Higher pitched whirring is one sign. (Notice the RPM reading at that point, and you'll begin to develop a sense of when you need to shift gears in this car. Most cars need to be shifted whenever they hit 2500 RPMs).
Lift your right foot off the gas pedal altogether--do not press the accelerator or brake pedal.
Press the clutch pedal down with your left foot until you feel it dis-engage. (A very slight jarring, a change in engine sound, a change in feel. RPMs will drop to the idling rate and the engine should be much quieter.)
Smoothly pull the shift lever straight back from 1st to 2nd gear.
Release the clutch and immediately press lightly on the accelerator/gas pedal again.
Balance between the two pedals, don't pull out or push down hard on either immediately.
Do NOT dis-engage the clutch "just a little bit" while deciding when to switch gears. This is called "riding the clutch" and it will lead to expensive repairs.

I don't normally use 1st gear, but I do use 2nd gear to drive up a hill or to have more power when passing other vehicle.

An automatic car uses each gear for you when appropriate. You don't do a thing!
Manual transmissions are where you decide what gear to use.

If you are going downhill and need to go very slowly. 2nd is for around 20-25 MPH, so don't throw it into 2nd when you are going 50 to slow down. It helps save the breaks though if you are going really slow.

The only thing they are good for is to slow your car down without using the brake.. Going downhill in snowy conditions is about only time I use them

they are to move the car at a slower speed possibally for ice or snow you don't want to keep shifting up and down on ice and because if you don't have them it will take you forever and a day to get to 60 mph
