Well, I have driven that route many times. I am from Florida and just went to Orlando for Christmas. It is true that going through Illinois down 55 is boring...very boring, nothing but fields. Plus, going through Indianapolis is faster. You can stop in Indianapolis, the mountains in tennessee, Chattanooga, Atlanta, Gainesville FLA home of the Florida Gators where I went to college! or just get to O-town to do the parks.
I suggest buying a paperback (It's large so you don't have to unfold) atlas from walmart or a book store, I got mine for $10 at walmart. You can also enter your info on www.mapquest.com or www.mapblast.com. The good thing about the websites is that they will tell you if there are detours or delays due to construction or roads closed. That is where the atlas comes in handy. If you have to find an alternate route, you have a map of every state. The good thing is Indianapolis just finished construction so that way should be clear, unless they began something new. Atlanta is busy no matter what time you drive through and I-75 in south GA and North FLA has severe 2pm-6pm grid lock and it's only two lanes in each direction.
So long story short you can go 90 east to 65 south to Indianapolis (or 90/94 to the skyway to 65) which takes you into tennessee where you will merge onto I-24 Chattanooga/knoxville then merge onto I-75 south to Fla. Once you are past Atlanta you can merge onto 475 to valdosta which then merges back with 75 south( this is a cut off route that skips a large section of 75 and lands you further south faster), but you can always stay on 75 south it will just take you longer. Stay on 75 south through FLA and once you come to a little area called Tavares you will see signs for the Florida Turnpike. This merges off the left side of 75 (75 continues to Tampa). On the turnpike you will go through a toll that is now $2 and when you get to Orlando you will see signs for all the attractions and can even see Universal Islands of adventure from the turnpike. Depending on where you are going to stay the best exits are I-4 west to Walt Disney World area or International Drive which is the closest locations for Sea World and Universal. Hope this helps.

I-94 to I-65 to Indianapolis, I-74 to Cincinnati, I-75 through Atlanta to Florida, then I believe it's the Florida Turnpike to Orlando.

Don't go through the middle of Illinois, it's really boring.
Metropolis, Illinois, might be along your route and it's the "hometown of Superman" plus has a casino boat.
