like grabbing at the peas or mashed potatos with your hand? what if i need to elbow the people to my left and right? can't i do that? you've gotta have room to maneuver. and what's this pass the chicken thing? it's as if people are too lazy to get up and get it their selves. have you ever wanted to throw a hand full of mashed potatos into someone's face, across the table? am i insane or am i not the only one who's thought about this?

I never understood this rule either, and it does seem so irrelevent.
However, I think throwing mashed potatoes in someones' face is not a good idea. I know someone who would deliberately eat with their mouth open just to see how other people would squirm, but never actually say anything.
I think table manners are hilarious, and their are so many opportunities to get your own back!

As far as I'm concerned, the whole purpose of a table is to give you a place to rest your elbows. You don't need a table to hold your food - your plate will do just fine on your lap. But you can't put your elbows on your lap - you need a table to do that. So why in the name of all that is holy would someone make up a rule preventing you from doing what tables were designed for?!!

The "no elbows on the table" rule is VERY old-fasioned and it is not a thing that is really thought about much anymore.

I don't think that it is that bad if you are at home but when you go out I think that it is manners, and people need that when you are out in public
