* Their ability to communicate effectivly. "People skills" count. It doesn't matter what your IQ is if you don't know how to have an interesting conversation and draw people in.

* General Knowlege about daily events. Being book smart doesn't give you everthing that you need to know. What is going on in the "real world" isn't always found in a book.

* IQ does count. Some people are just lacking in brain power.

* Attitude. I think that a person has to be at leaset a little bit opptimistic for ME to want to stick around long enough to hear what they have to say. For example, if they are preaching that the world is coming to an end beacuse of the extention of the three-toed sloth, I think that for me to consider them intelligent, they need to be optimistic - have a plan or an idea on how to save the world by saving the sloth.

*Commen sence - I hate to say it, but I know some people that test out at a much higher IQ level than me, but they just lack good 'ol commen sence.

Someone who speaks clearly and is articulate is often percieved as intelligent. Intelligent people are often somewhat misunderstood by their fellows and are considered eccentric. Many people will be very intelligent in one area but behind average in others. So in conclusion, I do not believe that there is one determinant factor involved in spotting intelligent people since there are so many different types of intelligence.

Being willing to try.

Where I used to work, people would always ask me if I knew how to fix things, and I would always say "I don't know, let me look at it" and when I figured it out, they thought I was smart.
