Men have always been promiscuous in ancient history. The higher up the social ladder you go, the more the guys can get away with. Women on the other hand were killed for less than sex. Some cultures were worse than others of course though.

Yes! But not for the reason you think. Keep in mind that the life span of the average person was shorter than it is now. Diseaes, war, ecologocial facors such as drought etc could halve a population easily....after the bubonic plague in europe during the middle ages, the population of europe was reduced to half. So it was important to reproduce as much as possible. Also, the primary source of labor in many communities was the family unit.

So having sexual r/ships with as many people as possible was not necessarily frowned upon but I would imagine that there were certain rules in how it was done......

Well, since women were spending their lives around home and the fields, there were more than men, who were fighting, sailing and hunting. Thus, it is math: number of men much less than the number of women, so, multiple sex partners was necessary! Frequently this was resolved even by laws!
Thus, we find in classic Athens, men had to have two homes, each one for each wife!
