I think good manners got killed right along with chivalry. Sad but true. You can partially blame society and parents, but the blame really has to be put on the individual. They know right from wrong and, especially when it comes to giving your seat to an elderly person. I treat all people the way I would like to be treated. I like saying good morning to random people not only to brighten up their day a little, but it makes me feel a little good about myself as well. I always thank the bus driver for the ride and say have good day or enjoy the rest of your evening.

Manners I think are taught. But truth be told many kids and grown folk these days just really don't care and that's the sad thing about it.

I may be sounding like an instigator, but I believe manners, like chivalry, was destroyed by feminism. Allow me to explain.

Feminists began perceiving kind treatment by men as a threat to their Independence, and insult to their ability. No longer were men honored for treating a women kindly, (as all men should). In stead, they were shuned or rebuked. This began the repression of manners and chivalry.

With time, men became frustrated with the reactions of their kindness and chivalry. In response, they began neglecting manners altogether. No longer did men greet with a handshake. No longer did men open doors for women.

Women took this transformation even further. They began acting like men, without manners. They began wearing man's clothing. They began sitting like men. They began trying to outdo men in vulgarity and obscenities.

This generation of men and women aged, as any other. They became the elders to the youthful generation. They, naturally, influenced the youthful generation in their spiteful and ill-mannered ways.

Youths, then, were never taught to honour their elders. Youths were never raised with good manners and chivalry. By this stage, manners and chivalry were nothing more than folklore.

When modern parenting was instituted, manners went out the door. Modern parenting is letting children do anything they want, giving them everthing they want and basically let them control the house, family and any gatherings. Parents are just plain lazy and manners have gone out the door.

You used to be expected to use manners, but now our society doesnt expect anything out of us. We are a society of selfishness and we dont have to be polite, however, there are people who do not use manners, but expect those around them to be polite to them.

Kinda makes me wish i had lived in earlier times.

Mostly it is upbringing. Just yesterday I was at a bbq and an 11 year old burped out loud without covering his mouth, but he did say excuse me.

I said you should cover your mouth. And his mother corrected me and said "But he said excuse me".

Some think it's "uncool or weak".

But a Spanish friend of mine told me a cool saying, but I only know what it roughly means in English. It is: Using manners doesn't make you any less of a man.

I think people feel they are entitled to do things, like taking a seat and not giving it to an elderly person simply because they were there first. I also think that because people are not so interdependent anymore they just don't care about their fellow humans.

They're not at home, or school, or anywhere else that's for sure. I think It's horrible that there is no manners today. I try to teach my boys 6,7, and 9 to use their best manners at all times. When they're not taught at home, and then they're not taught at school, they will never learn.

it could be both...but society now has gotten everything so easy they forget to be greatful for it.....they think they got things themselves without any help and that is the sad part to it...you wouldn't be anyone in this world if it wasn't for the help of others and people don't realize that..so therefore they tend to not be polite and forget to be nice to others, thinking they won't need anyones help to succeed...it really all comes down to that....
