not long, but the real question is, when it's time to start fishing again... will the fisherman want to leave the welfare checks and start working again?

Once you get a taste of government dependency its hard to get motivated to return to self reliance...

They aren't being over-fished by Americans at least. Japanese, Chinese and Russian long netters are the guilty ones, they drag nets that not only indiscriminately harvest fish, it breaks up coral formations used for feeding/nesting habitats. How long would it take for coral reefs to regrow? A hundred years maybe? How do you know when the fish stocks are recovered? Mainly by reported catches. I could see periodic bans in certain areas, they do it with fresh water lakes, certain times of the year there's no fishing, or certain days of the week. But ban drift nets and gill nets completely!

I'd guess 10 years. I don't know if all species could recover completely though. The oceans have 10-20% of the fish compared to 50 years ago. Maybe it would take another 50 years to restore the oceans but I think it would take much less.

Is there an answer? I'd like to know too.

The problem is caused by the US too.http://www.environmentcalifornia.org/ocean-legacy/save-our-ocean-legacy

I'm not sure but I hope those Japanese whalers stop whaling, those whales are endangered.

I read somewhere that there's an incentive given to fish only certain species at a certain age and a fine for catching young fish. So I don't think it's possible for people to stop fishing. A lot of jobs are on the line.

I agree they are being overfished, but I dont think anyone could really answer as to how long it would take for them to replenish themselves. Plus, there is no way you could stop everyone from doing it. Too many countries rely on seafood.
