I have some Middle Eastern customers (Indian / Pakistani?) and I see them often. We have a great rapport and I very much enjoy their friendly nature.
I had to put my dog to sleep and the next day I was telling these customers about it. They were completely numb.
It seemed as though they couldn't understand my grief. They said absolutely nothing in the form of condolence, and it felt as if they thought I was a bit looney.
Any ideas as to why they acted this way?

To "ME"...
regarding your idiodic response....
I ask if Middle Eastern people dislike pet dogs...I did not state that ALL MIDDLE EASTERNERS HATE PET DOGS.
Nowhere in my question does it reflect anything about stereotyping.
It is a question, not a statement.

Your middle eastern friends may be muslims, and if so, they do not keep dogs as pets. To the muslims, the dog and pig are both ceremonially unclean animals, not to be touched even. So they would not have much contact with dogs from not ever having one as a pet and would not understand your affection for your dog. They're not being unkind, I don't think, just not aware.

As a Middle-eastern man.
we do NOT eat dogs or any other pets.
we do NOT treat women like dogs by the way. be honest and read more before you insult others.

i have 2 horses and a cat. but dogs in islam should be for one of two purposes: for hunting or for guarding. so we don't have many dogs. but thoug we don't harm or dislike.

There is a story about a man who has already committed many awful sins. One day the man see a dog in a desert. The dog is so thirsty that he bark so loudly and eat sand. The man brought a buck of water and give it to the dog so the dog can drink. Although the man has so many sins, Prophet Muhammad said that the man is forgiven by God because his good deed to the dog.

As for cats, there are no rules that prohibit us to have them or to get them inside our house. Prophet Muhammad has a best friend named Abu Hurairah, which in Arabic means "the father of cat". Prophet Muhammed used to call him that way because he has a cat which he take care so well and loved so much. This can be meaning that Prophet Muhammad doesn't hate cats but he never had one.

Every culture is different. If you go to Brazil its nothing for women to be wearing swimsuits that made of what looks like string 8-) but if you go to Canada a bathing suit like that would get some unwanted attention LOL. I am living in an area that has a high concentration of Middle Eastern people and it all depends on the people. Some nationalities seem to like animals more than others. I am German but do not like dogs yet my husband is Armenian and he likes them.

For the Muslims in the Middle East Dogs are considered filthy animals, not clean and should be kept out side of the home. When, if they ever do have dogs! they keep them outside for mostly protection of the home. I read an article in Egypt where there were making fun of us, and how we treat our pets, namely our dogs and cats. How we have food made just for them, and how some people have clothing, bakery items etc. just for pets.

I am sorry for your lose, but I don't think they look at you as looney. I believe, they look at you as someone who cares too much about an animal who died, and it is part of life, and don't care about other people in the middle east who are being killed by others, namely the US. Believe me, whenever there is a subject about anything, it will turn around to what they feel, and the death of your beloved pet, is not considered as important to them as the death, or misfortune of their own people.
I am sure they do have a friendly nature, but to them he was just an animal, and not one to greave over much. I am sorry for that, it is sad. It is only their culture, nothing agianst you. consider the fact, if they want to insult another, they call them names such as: 'animals' or 'Dog' or 'Son of a Dog', just to name some. These are considered insults, not someone who can be considered part of the family.

Maybe they personally have never had a dog and couldn't make the connection. Some people are just dispassionate. It is not a cultural thing. That is ridiculous.

They hate dogs because they think they are "dirty." Just goes to show how messed up in the head they are over there.

according to the linked article, the dislike of dogs is the result of a misinterpretation of the koran.

2nd link: i searched the koran for "dog." there are two citations. neither of them are disparaging.
