Canadian immigration officials at ports of entry will issue persons planning to stay longer than 180 days a visitor’s record. As an american you need an offical picture ID AND a proof of citizenship.
A driver's licence alone is not enough, non-americans can get them too. I know, I am not american and I got a US driver's licence.
