Prote really was from K-Pax, he had inhabited Robert Porter's body for the time being and that's why Porter is so listless at the end of the movie and why that girl was missing from the asylum, he had gone on to inhabit her body and take her away.

Hmmmm, I had to think about this one - I remember at the time that I was firmly convinced he was Robert Porter & his mind had just splintered because of the trauma he'd been through; the mind does some strange things to protect trauma victims. So I think that's my answer - he was Robert Porter & he just couldn't handle what he'd been through. I thought it was really cool, tho, that they had Jeff Bridges playing the human when he played the alien in Starman!!! Good question - thanks!!!
