They won't say it to their face, even if they've got a big problem with them.

I didn't think that it mattered that I was from the UK, but apparently it does, so I might as well put this in. And the reason I am saying it is from my limited experience as a temporary over one and a half years.

I'm saying the UK because I'm from the UK! How do I know if they do it in other countries?!

It builds bonds between the two people talking, they have a common "enemy" to talk about so makes their friendship deeper and connects them more. People have done it forever in every country, in days gone by people talked less about individuals and more about the enemy of the country/city etc.

like most people who've responded to your question, i don't think this is a problem limited to the UK.
i lived in the UK for 2 years and i think a lot of people talk about others behind their backs not to be b*tchy or nasty but rather because they don't know how to approach someone to their face about a problem. the UK is the home of good manners. bringing up something that might cause conflict is just Not The Done Thing. Let's talk about the weather instead.
people who are gonna gossip or be really b*tchy about other people are the same everywhere - they put other people down to make themselves feel bigger, which screams of insecurity.
All that aside, if you've got friends who're talking about you behind your back, then you better ask yourself if they're really your friends. Having a problem with a friend and not knowing how to bring it up is one thing. B*tching about a friend behind their back and saying nasty things is quite another.

I wish it was just the UK. The country where I live people don't tell you to your face, they just ostracise you, and because of this people will believe any lie they are told because you can't deny it. (and the racism helps this along too) It makes them feel slightly better about themselves though, if only for 5 minutes, until their next "fix" of abuse.

The same reason people from every country do. Some people whatever their nationality talk behind others backs due to their personality. Not fair to generalise.

We're not the only ones, also, it depends on the personality, some people don't mind saying things to others' faces, others think it's cruel.

I don't know speciffically why they do it in the UK,
but over here in Zwolle they do it because if they would do it to that persons face they would get clobbered.
No worries with me though. You are my friend I will tell you to your face you are uk-hater next time we meet.
