yes, there is great truth in condradiction. we are dynamic, complex beings, so depending upon how you look at things, both statements can be true for you.
be yourself- meaning be natural, relax...take the mind out of what you are doing- don't think too much. most importantly love and respect yourself- and others will follow suit. sometimes we create negative things in our lives from fear. we attract exactly what we don't want by thinking too much about it. don't try to be somthing else- in the sense that you think you are not good enough right now- you are perfect just as you are, and when you believe this- this energy will shine through, and you will be in the state of BEING. that's where we all are being our best.
yet it is true that you can use your mind to decide what you want out of life, focus on it, and get it. like prosperity or a new job, or new friends, anything you want! fake it till you make it means if you change the way you percieve yourself, if you believe that you are somone who is prosperous- you will attract prosperity into your life. you can't have what you don't allow into your life.
even physical health. thinking healthy, will keep you healthy. fake it till you make it is training your mind- reprogramming the computer that creates your experience.
a great book on this subject is:

the law of attraction, the processes -by esther and jerry hicks

Yes they can work. What's yourself wants? Success, right? You want the best right? Then you need to expect this in life. You need to believe in your abilities, in what you want out of life and visualise it.
Now, what does it mean to fake it? People get this wrong because they haven't read the books. They just hear people talk about it.
Fake it means - you know when you do something which is good for you but you rarely do it because its not a habit. So you got to force yourself for 21 days, every day to do it. Let's say, talking to one person a day.
You keep doing and at first it is uncomfortable. Then after a while it becomes a skill and you're not talking one person a day. When I say person, I mean someone you don't know.
Then when you keep doing it enough, your subconscious mind maps it out and makes it into a habit. Suddenly, after a month, what you have been doing uncomfortably, becomes a habit. Now this habit, keep it consistent and it can get you to where you want to be.
Like - you need to say sell something. If you sell 10, you got £1,000 profit. But you know you can sell more. BUt you scared to talk to people. So you either stay broke or do it. You either say like some people do in anything, "Oh it doesn't work. My father's cat, aunties, mother's friend use to do it and it never worked." But that's them. This is you.
You fake it so your subconcious mind gets trained to help you do the habit. Your mind is very powerful mate. It will play on what your DOMINANT thought is. If your DOMINANT thought is being broke because that's what you're always thinking, then you're going to be broke, and you'll stay broke.
But if you're dominant thought is - "yes, this my goal, keep going" And you keep doing what you, even there is no result, you work it with blind faith, then life plays a part in helping you.
People think that they sow the seeds and they'll reap tomorrow. It doesn't work that way with success. You sow now and it reaps later on. So yeah. I belive you can be yourself and fake it till you make it.
People hate change. But they need to change the way they think, the way they talk. It's a pattern they got. Bad habits pattern which is in the subconcious mind because they've been doing it for years or someone has been saying to them, "you'll never make it," or, "you idoit," or, "just stick to reality." These are in your sub mind and it plays a great part on your self image.
It's not a contradiction. Read books on the Subconscious mind. It works. It worked for me. Not straight away. I had to learn to read English first and then read these books. So you got it easy.

ok, the readers digest version:
both can co-exist...
fake it till you make it: requires a knowlege of self or at least the basics of self discovery. those are the precepts to be true to. the rest is just faking in terms of appearances. appear contented though you are brooding. it's just a more common way to say 'ignore it till it goes away'
