They didn't, not really.
Firstly the makeup changed often over the years as the band went through different periods. Secondly, even within the same period the makeup had subtle variations from show to show.
As for how they got it so close time after time, you have to remember that they must have applied that makeup hundreds of times over the years--it is largely a question of practice and experience.

templates...and it wasn't exactly the same every time...a half an inch off sometimes...
