i had a dental xray done a month or so ago i was 8 weeks. They put two lead aprons over me to make sure it wouldnt hurt the baby. I havent had novacaine for anything but my dentist was wanting me to get a root canal and he said i could have one i think anytime durring my 3rd trimester. I dont want to risk it though unless i am in serious pain.

Taking xrays while pregnant during the first 3 months of pregnancy is not advised for several reasons two of which being the potential for birth defects and possible miscarriage.

The reason: Developing cells (your embryo) tend to be more sensititve to radiation.
Basically.

But...pregnant women do get xrays. It's just that I've never seen one take them so early unless it was an emergency.

If you do take your xrays tell the tech you are pregnant! If they take xrays they should be the one's asking but some people forget. y'know...

Get two gowns and drape them across you lap. The reason I say two is because you don't know the condition of the gowns in the first place. Cracks and creases in the gowns reduce their overall effectiveness.

Lead gowns are supposed to be laid flat, neatly draped over bench or hung straight to ensure against this but some people are carless. They just bend them, bunch them up and lay them anywhere. And the fact that the people taking your xrays will most likely be DENTAL TECHS is all the more reason to exercise caution. (I'm prejudiced I admit that lol) I'm not saying they're incompetant but the fact remains--they're not xray techs.

Anyway I do know panoramics are performed but I doubt even then that dental xrays put forth that much dosage (radiation). That is, at the early stages of pregnancy the would-be damage kind of depends on exactly how many rads per exposure you'd be getting. And that varies as the Embryo grows. Your embryo may be able to tolerate more at 6wks than it could at 2wks.

Personally I'd wait until the first few weeks had passed. If your physician advises you differently then go ahead, I guess. If it's that important.
If anything happens well...I suppose you could always sue him later.
(Trust me, you'd win.)

it is not a good idea the radiation from the xray can harm your baby, and so can the medicine in the novacaine

Had dental x-rays done at 36 weeks. The dentist put one of those lead smock things (or whatever they are) over my belly to protect the baby. Hope this helps, make sure that you let your dentist know that you are pregnant.

My dentist gave me a root canal while I was pregnant, when I was about 16 weeks. When he X-rayed me, he put two of the lead blankets over me as an extra precaution. It's fine for your dentist to numb you up to drill or replace a filling or crown, and for you to use nitrous oxide, but you probably shouldn't get a procedure done that will require you to use narcotic painkillers for more than a dose or two.

I had it done during the first trimester, the doctor said it was safe enough to do during the 1st and 3rd trimester only. They will make sure and cover you with a couple of lead blankets to protect you and your baby. Good luck!

I was 5 months along and had tooth pulled with Novocaine. No problems with the baby. They don't recommend x-rays unless really needed.
