He's taking this summer to figure out a plan for the next 4 years. What would you recommend he study? What organizations should he volunteer for? What books should he read?

Volunteer for the Peace Corps. Definitely. FANTASTIC experience.

They'll give him 2 1/2 months of language, culture, and job specific classes before he goes to his own site. Once he's there he gets free housing, a living stipend (he can live well on it), and medical care. They'll also train him in a skill, although usually it's best if he already has one (it improves his chances of getting in).

He should have already taken 2 years of a language in college. If he hasn't and is interested in learning a language, I'd recommend French so he can go to French speaking Africa. But, it doesn't matter since they will teach him another language once he gets there (he needs to show that he has the ability to learn another language).

I also recommend he do at least one study abroad experience in college before he graduates. He needs to know what it is like to live in another country to make sure it is something he wants to do. It's not a requirement, but it sure will help him adjust to Peace Corps life better. It'll also show the recruiter that he knows what it's like eating food he can't identify, communicating in another language, using non-Western toilets, etc.

You can go on their website and see what they are looking for. Right now Aids education is HUGE. Even if his main job is something else, he'll need to know enough about that as well.

Peace Corps is a great step for someone who wants to get his feet wet in Africa. It's a hard job. It truly is "the hardest job you'll ever love." He'll have a lot more responsibility than any other job he's ever done. But, it's SO worth it. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

You can contact a recruiter who will talk to you and give you more information. Each state also has Returned Peace Corps Volunteer groups that meet on a regular basis for coffee, volunteer work, etc. You could check them out and hear what they have to say about their experiences.

Tell him good luck and have fun!

He should study economics and politics, specializing in foreign studies. This way he'll have a decent background to build on and he'll be able to udnerstand the cycle of disease and hunger in Africa. He'll also have the wherewithall to get into government/politics or the non-profit sector in order to actually get something done.

He should write to the governments of the African nations and tell them to be less corrupt and take care of their own people. Africa has vast mineral wealth and there is no excuse for poverty there. He should concern himself more with poverty in our country, where there is REALLY no excuse for anyone to be hungry.

Against hunger...Write flyers and tell them to move to where the food is! Its their governments that are starving them...supply them with gins and rations and tell them its now their fight.
