As a smoker I still have to say that you are protecting some people's rights (i.e. the rights of non-smokers) whilst perhaps invading others' rights (the rights of smokers).
I do think that the smoking ban has more than a hint of hypocrisy in that the Government is the one profitting from the tax on cigarettes in the first place! If they are so opposed to it then surely they should push for a ban? But where would they make up the lost revenue? So in a sense they are like drug-pushers, profitting from the addicted!

Nowhere near as much as the fact that there are now 2000 CCTV Surveillence cameras in Central London alone and they have now introduced a mandatory National ID Card for all Brits. The UK is right behind the US in the police state stakes...why do you think the 7/7 attacks happened?! To get Britain on the same page as the U.S.
Considering the blatant removal of British civil rights and freedoms, smoking is the least of their problems!

NO! I was a barmaid until last Monday and I loved my job, it was in my local village pub and was good for me because I have to drive a long way into town otherwise and I have 2 young boys to look after at home.... anyway partly why I left is because of the smoke. Nobody has the right to pollute the air in a public place and put other people's lives at risk. I applaud the ban! Many people will go the pubs now who couldn't before because their condition of health prevented them being in a smoky atmosphere, or because they didnt' want to get cancer.

No. The ban only applies to enclosed public places such as bars and clubs. The intention is to protect the health of the people who work in such places. If someone really wants a ciggie they can always nip outdoors for a few minutes. Incidentally, this ban has been in place in Scotland since the end of March and we seem to be getting by OK.

Ya, all these little whining non-smokers p*ss me off, I'm all for segregation of smoking and non-smoking areas, that's fair enough isn't it? But a total ban is just nonsense, people will still smoke regardless and the fact is life is about choices, obviously smokers are making a bad choice my choosing to smoke but it's a choice nonetheless.

I don't mind, because I hate having to breath everyone elses smoke. Either that or it's the actual people who smoke who is at fault of standing in such a way that I can't actually escape from breathing it all in...

Also I might like to point out that the particles from car exhaust fumes are much bigger than the ones in cigarettes. So car exhaust fumes aren't as bad as smoking because they don't go as deep into your lungs as the cigarettes do.
But whatever...

Turn the question around - smoking is an invasion of people's rights, justify to the majority why it should be allowed - it kills people at worst, and at best makes them stink and be addicted to a drug.

maybe for the smokers, but all us non-smokers who have to put up with it are at risk as well (from passive smoking). so it is better for people who don't smoke. but also note that, i dont think any politicians smoke... if they did then they probably wouldn't have a smoking ban...lol ( i can imagine Tony Blair right now with a cigar... wont be able to get that picture out of my head all day now....lol) i bet they all smoke but they're forcing the media to keep quiet...lol

no i dont and i smoke I personally think it will give people the extra kick up the backside to quit. As for an invasion of peoples rights i dont think it is, its an invasion of peoples rights to blow smoke at them and make them breathe it in when they dont smoke themselves

do none smoker relies the air outside in the street is more harm full to you then any cigarettes.you do not have to band smoking in places, just separate them from none smokers, and put a extractor fan in the smoking areas.so none smoker who drive car should think before moaning about smokers.i ride a push bike and i cough more when i am behind cars then when i smoke that should tell you something.
