What's the best course of study for someone who wants to be a vet tech?

I'm asking for a situation in which the vet tech path is not available. Is biology a good major, or anatomy/physiology? What sort of requirements must be met in Illinois to be licensed? Are there good professional organizations to join?

If anatomy and/or physiology is an available major, take that. Otherwise go with a biology major, and maybe minor in business.
