OKay I have a 20 gallon tank and I had 2 goldfish to start with so yesterday I bought 4 guppy and a catfish. This morning 2 of my guppys was no where to be seen so I thought well maybe the catfish got them because he was chasing the others off any time they swam to close. SO when I went to get the cat out one of my guppys reappeared but I still can't find the other one? Also the one that came out of hidding went back down to the bottom after less than a min of swimming around?

the petstore said the guppys will do fine in a unheated tank and thats what they recomended plus they said they could eat the goldfish food it's the catfish that we had to buy a food that sinks to the bottom but he won't stay at the bottom and eat it. The other fish go to the bottom and eat it.

I told the petstore what size tank I had and asked for there oppinion. The fish are bigger then the catfish's mouth and to be honest I have no clue what kind it is it's grey with black spots something tells me it's a carp but I'm not sure. Plus when they get bigger I will get a bigger tank. My father in law has a 100 gallon that I can have when I need it. He had goldfish that started off in a small tank and as they grew so did his tank then adventually he built a fish pond and assuming everything lives that long as far as the goldfish and catfish go he will instruct us on how to build are own small pond.

contacted pet store learned to never trust the first person you talk to at a petstore come to find out the cat did manage to eat one of the guppies. the girl that sold it to me was new and sold me a more aggressive type so they replaced it with a cory cat and replaced my guppy as far as the other guppy he is just hidding out. I was informed that they do infact hide a lot.

First of all- Goldfish are cold water and guppies are tropical. Fish are coldblooded the temp of the water really makes a difference. If your tank is warm your goldies will be more susceptible to disease if your tank is cold then your guppies and catfish will be more likely to get sick. If you put it in the middle then your weakening everyone.

Second- your tank was maxed out at 2 goldfish. They are dirty and very delicate. They also get to be huge. 2 adult goldfish would not comfortably fit in a 20 gallon. Goldfish should be kept basically alone and in enormous tanks. They are high maintenance and produce tons of ammonia- all the fish you just added are going to be sensitive to those changes in ammonia.

Third- You didn't say what type of catfish. If it has a shark like body your going to have problems. Once they hit about 4-5" they get aggressive. He might be fine now but soon he will be ripping up your goldies tails and if fish are disappearing he would be the culprit. If he has a short body-like a cory cat- then you probably won't have problems with tank mates- temp.though???

Your guppies sound like they are in a little water shock. It happens- the water was probably different along with the water chemistry. They are probably going to be skiddish and lethargic until they become accustomed to it. (check your water your ammonia may be too high for the new comers) If they can fit in the catfishes mouth then he may have eaten your missing baby.

You really need to pick what kind of tank you want. A big tank with a few large fish- Goldies. Or a tank with a whole lot of little fish- community tropical. Trade-in the other fish. (If you choose Goldies Dojo loaches are good tank mates. You should get them in pairs though- they are really flirty and annoy the Goldies if they don't have a companion)

Good Luck an Have Fun!

Goldfish and guppies need totally different conditions in the tank. One is a coldwater fish and the other is tropical and they need completely different foods. I dont own any catfish so I'm not sure about them.

If the guppies are small enough to fit in the goldfishes or catfishes mouth then they will get eaten. Its true for any fish that is small though.

Okay, guppies are like that. You may not see them for a long time and then, there they are. Of course, you will be seeing many, many guppies very soon.
On the other hand, they may have gotten eaten but that is probably not the answer.

My grandmother had several guppies who would simply hide all of the time. It is just their nature
