I am obsessed with the platypus. They don't give birth to live young like some other people have said, but they do have mammary glands right? The STRANGEST animal, almost. They're covered in fur as well. I think nursing young plays a big part in deciding what's a mammal and what's not.

They DO lay eggs but they also give milk.
It and the two species of echidna are the only monotremes or egg-laying mammals to be found on earth.

They are extremely hairy. They have two layers of fur - a dense waterproof outercoat and a grey woolly underfur to provide much needed insulation.

They are meat eaters (mostly worms).

They live in burrows.

It has ears. The ear openings or grooves are on either side of the platypus's head. The platypus does not have external ears. These openings are closed when diving or swimming under water. Out of the water these ear openings are very sensitive to sounds.

It is VERY warm blooded. It's body temperature is around 37 degrees Celsius. In Fahrenheit.....that would be over 100 degrees.

Platypuses are capable of making sounds. These sounds have been compared to a puppy growling.

Definitely mammals. No doubt.

The Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is a 30–40 cm long, half-aquatic mammal endemic to eastern Australia, and one of the five extant species of monotremes, the only mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young (the other four are echidnas). It is the sole extant representative of its family (Ornithorhynchidae) and genus (Ornithorhynchus), though a number of fossilised relatives have been found, some of them also in the Ornithorhynchus genus.
