Cryptozoology is the study of animals that are presumed to exist, but for which conclusive proof is missing; the term also includes the study of animals generally considered extinct, but which are still occasionally reported. Those who study or search for such animals are called cryptozoologists, while the hypothetical creatures involved are referred to by some as "cryptids", a term coined by John Wall in 1983.

along with the more glamourous investigations of "mythical" animals, the more mundane (and entirely valid) aspects of cryptozoology include:

Animals thought to be extinct but that have survived (happens more often than you'd think).

New species whose existence is not yet supported or accepted by science (at one time this would have included such animals as gorillas and orangutans)

Animals that are found inexplicably living outside their natural habitat (ie piranhas in a Calgary lake, wallabies in Southern England, etc.)

Cryptozoology studies animals/species that people have claimed exist, but there is little evidence to prove so. It studies creatures such as Bigfoot/Sasquatch, the Loch Ness Monster/Nessie, chupacabras, Mothman, etc. to gain more proof of these beings.

It is the study of "mythical" or fantastic beasts.
Unicorns, dragons, bigfoot, etc. Until such time as society accepts them as real, and then they move into the realm of zoology. I don't think that happens often though.
