When I turn on my water, I hear a sound like a motor running in the pipes. It isn't close to the water heater so it's not that. And it's definately not a hammer sounding noise. It stops shortly after I turn the water off. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you have air in your pipes. You will have to get someone or some information about "bleeding" the air out of the pipes. It's not difficult.

If you live in an apartment or high rise, that is most likely the booster pump. If your on a well, its the pump. If your on a city main, you got air in the pipes. Go to the top floor an run the taps to bleed the air out of the system.

There are like little accumulator like products that you can place wherever you have a faucet that will help prevent that noise. It's either air in the pipes or a loose pipe. The put those in my house by all the faucets and by the clothes washer.
