Depends on where in Alaska you'll be traveling. In Southeast Alaska (Juneau, Ketchikan, Sitka, Skagway, etc.), you'll want pants and layers on top - tee-shirt for when it's warmer and you're hiking around, flannel shirt over that, and a raincoat. Take sneakers for walking around and hiking boots if you plan to be more rugged. A hat and sunglasses will be nice to reduce glare when on water or glacier.

Take a little bit of everything. It will be cooler and layers are the best way to dress. It's always colder in the glacier areas. Just got back from Glacier Bay and College Fiord. It was shorts on the way but once there, it was quite cold. Boots would be a good idea if you'll be hiking, otherwise sneakers should do the trick. Definitely take one jacket and a hat. The sun, when it's out, is very bright!

Sept. is when it starts to get cold. There will be no snow on the ground during your trip here. :-(
The rule of thumb in Alaska is to dress in Layers. A thick jacket is good ! Days is 10-20 degrees warmer then night.
The air here in Alaska is drier then lower 48. It can be 40-50 degrees here and be very comfortable. Raingear is good to bring and sunglasses.
The responder before me gave good advice.
