The word "tenfold" (like "twofold", "threefold", etc and "manifold" ['many (times)']) can be used two different ways:
1) as an adjective, meaning "containing ten or ten parts"
(This us of -fold may more easily be seen with SMALLER numbers, e.g. "the office of a clergyman is twofold; public preaching and private influence", i.e., "the clergyman's office/job has two parts [or aspects]...")
2) as an adverb, meaning "ten times as much/many"
example: "the population increased tenfold"
