close processes and programs that are not necessary.
avoid running many programs at the same time.
you can check what programs/processes are running with + + < del> and click processes. Make sure you know what you are closing.
The other way is to overclock your computer. This will make all your hardware run hotter and increase the likelyhood of something breaking down.

Make sure your hard drive is defraged and has enough free space on it (it least 15% of the drive free). Remove any services and programs running in the background that you do not have to have (Start / Run / msconfig / and under the start up tab uncheck anything you don't have to have).
But odds are the changes will be small. Adding RAM is what will really make the difference.
Either that or a faster processor... which ususally means a new system board... which requires different memory... and a cooler case... and a bigger hard drive... and a top of the line graphic card.. and ....
Maybe the RAM would be cheaper?

You can tweak the services that can be found in the administrative tools folder in the control panel. A guide that can help you do this plus tweak the operating system can be found here http://www.tweakhound.com/ There are a lot of system resource hogging programs that have little use to the normal user that can be safely turn off or down graded.

Put in a faster CPU!! The only way to improve your computer is via a memory or processor upgrade...which it sounds like you do not want to do...you can tweak things here or there but you realy will not see much improvement...
You could look into overclocking but that requires a ton of knowledge about CPU and Memory timing and multipliers...I don't think you are ready for that.

Free as much space as possible on the harddrive, upgrade the processor (if you're running Windows XP I'd recommend a 2.4GHz or higher, with at least 512MB RAM), close all unnecessary processes/services.
But don't end a process/service that you're unsure what it is.

Increase the size of the virtual memory paging file on your system to the maximum possible. If running Windows XP, click (control panel -> system -> advanced -> preformance -> settings -> advanced -> virtual memory -> change)

One thing you can do that is free is to be sure to keep spyware cleaned up. It sucks up your resources.
AntiSpyware watches for cookies and other malicious things put on your computer by websites that want to spy on you.
You should have Windows Defender. It is free from Microsoft and watches your system prevents programs from taking over your home page etc.
Go here to read about and get it - http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security...
Two other free programs you should get & run about once a week are Spybot and Adaware. They also are free and you can get them both here - http://www.download.com/
