get a good veriety of plants.
If you're planting a flower garden make sure you include some greenery. the color of the flowers pops better if they have a green background.
If you're planting veggies then plant what you will eat and share with others. Also, you can add some flowering plants to a veggie garden like marigolds to help keep the bugs down. I like garlic too for the same reason and it's a pretty little plant.
Be aware of how high and wide a plant will be when grown and plant the taller things in the back, shorter things in the front.
Have a veriety of color and things that will attract humming birds. I have my veggie garden near a pomigranite tree. the dark green of the tree is lovely to look at and the red blooms always have hummingbirds. I also put little extras in the garden like a ceramic frog and little butterflys markers. A chair or small bench is nice too so you can sit and enjoy your garden.
My garden changes every year depending on the mood i'm in when I plant.
Have fun and remember, there's always next years garden.
Good luck.

Try some nice annuals for your first garden. Zinneas, marigolds, sunflowers are so easy to grow for anyone. Go to your local garden center and ask for help for your area. You can also ask about bulbs that will grow next year. You might want to try pots the first time around. Mixing herbs with flowers is always nice; and look for some low maintenance grown covers. If for some reason you just cannot grow a nice garden, fake it with silk plants!
