4:20 is time to smoke Pot!!! Everyday I participate...And the date 4/20 is the biggest smoke out of the year!!!

The most cited and accepted story is that it's the time students at San Rafael High School in San Rafael, California used to meet behind a statue and roll up. After-school detention would end at about 4:20.
It's also used in the form of a date: 4/20 or April 20th.

In researching the exact time of Jerry Garcia's death, I found that, according to a People magazine (Aug. 21, 1995) cover story, he died on Wednesday, August 4, 1995 at 4:23 AM exactly. Watch the movie "Pulp Fiction"....pay particular attention to all the clocks.
That's the first mention of 4:20 that I can find.
It has evolved to mean someone that is 4:20 friendly doesn't mind smoking a little ganja every now and then.

I've never heard of signifigance with 4:20... but both the hands on a clock are lined up and pointing at the 4.

old hippie here-used to once a year a bunch of hippie would get together for a smoke in-guess the date-it has since changed to mean a time of day to smoke-no i dont participate dont like to wait that long my day starts much earlier-lots of love keep the peace old hippie

in california a bunch of kids would meet every dy after school at 4:20 to smoke pot and that was there code so there parents wouldnt know what they were doing
