why in an element symbol the mass no. is written on the top an atomic no. at the bottom and not the vice versa.
(kind of stupid doubt ? but i want to clarify it. )

There is no set rules how to describe mass and energy in the atomic structure. it all depend on which theory one folows.
Chemical description of mass structure for the atom has worked very well.Which symbol are better to use is a matter of preference.

It was an arbitrary convention. International scientists wanted to make sure everyone knew what everyone else was talking about so they said "okay we're putting the atomic number on the bottom."

I have different periodic tables in my classroom that have the masses and atomic number at different positions. I guess it depends on the publisher. There is no convention..

Basically because at.no is is made up of protons and mass.no is made up ofprotons and neutrons
As at.no [prtons+neutrons&electrons]it is much more imp.therefore at.no up
