I want to translate my childrens name into chinese for a tatoo im recieving?

I was wondering if anyone knows a website with the chinese alphabet so i could have my tatoo done. I dont want to be like Brittney Spears and get a tat in a different language and it be wrong.lol

If you were to literally use the letters of your childs name and replace them with Chinese equivalent would be pretty hard.

Alphabets are phonetic systems where the individual sounds of the language are represented with letters. Letters are symbols which only have phonetic values and do not mean anything by themselves. The letters in a word have to be read together and vocalized, either aloud or mentally, in order to be understood as a concept.

Chinese writing, on the other hand, developed as a system where the symbols represent concepts. Although sound does play a role in the construction of a character, it almost invariably stands for a semantic value. The very first characters developed from the graphic representation of certain objects (i.e. the picture of an elephant meant an elephant) but early on the system got much more complex and the majority of the symbols today do not have such a direct link between shape and meaning. But what is common in all of them is that they all represent a concept and not a sound. There are a few characters that stand for a sound, but always to a very unique sound (i.e. the sound of a horse running) and cannot be used for any other sound.

I imagine a character for your childs name exists but then who's to say the artist dosent **** it up and you get left with something totally random. If you insist on having a tat then perhaps get it done in English but choose a nice italic style.

I think getting your kids name is awesome because it's not anything you will regret, like a guy or girl people don't know how long they will be around. I would look it up in a book at the library first for asian words and such print it and give it to the artist.

Try a different language. A lot of people have Chinese lettering on themselves. Try a different language from another contry like, Korean or Japanese. My fiance and I have hieroglyphics on ourselves. It's a little weird but I love it!!!

i don't know any web sites but don't u know anyone who is Chinese?
i asked the guy who owns my local takeaway and he told me that sometimes its impossible 2 translate names but they can do a "similar to".
make sure they get it right before they start the tat for real. good luck. :)

If there is a Chinese resteraunt you know of, go there. You may find a worker/waitress-waiter/chef (or even a customer) there that knows Chinese. They can help you.

Why would you get your tattoo in chinese? Tattoo's are supposed to have personal meaning, and they are supposed to be original. Get it done in another language....unless you like being like EVERYONE else. (Chinese tattoos are too common and they don't look good)

I don't think that is right to get a tatoo you don't even know how to write or pronounce.
