Curious to know what person and body of work is most widely respected and acknowledged as the classic work on the topic of hypnosis.

The previous poster gave some excellent answers. However, if you want a book that delves into what science/research has actually shown about hypnosis, then I would recommend "Handbook of Hypnosis for Professionals". This book actually discusses the research studies and claims of hypnosis. It debunks quite a bit of hypnosis "myth" and also helps you to understand what hypnosis can (and cannot) do.

I went to a seminar on medical hypnosis a couple of years ago. Having read the "Handbook" I had a firm grasp on hypnosis could or couldn't do. I made the speakers very unsettled because their "seminar" was chock-filled with pseudoscience. I was actually able to call them on their many false statements/lies.

I cannot recommend this book enough to you.

If you're familiar with hypnosis, then you've no doubt heard of Master Hypnotist Steve G. Jones. His book, "Ultimate Conversational Hypnosis" has been voted as the best hypnosis course ever made. The book is also available in electronic format at: http://www.hypnosistocontrol.net

There is no one book. Erickson would be a name that comes to mind when you ask a question like this. You can find his work at several locations. Do a search on Milton Erickson. There are several reasons why Erickson's name comes to mind. Your web search should go a long way to explaining why him.

Personally I don't think there is one person. As you understand and respect the different styles presented in these works, you take from each. To just focus on one person, you short change yourself.

Since I trained with him, I happen to like Ormond McGill. He published several books. His complete book on Stage Hypnosis covers the topic thoroughly. It is just not about performing.

Charles Tebbets, Dave Elman, Gil Boyne are just some of the names that I can think of. There are several in the academic world like Rossi. I know I am forgetting so many.

Roy Hunter has great stuff on the basics. I would like at his web site to get a feel for what he has done. Great guy who really knows his stuff.
