Have you ever loaded up your vehicle or hooked a trailer or boat to it? When you are driving with an extra load the automatic may tend to shift many times, especially in the mountains. This will cause the transmission to heat up and eventually burn up. Then you will be waiting on a tow truck and have an expensive repair job ahead of you. You should use the other shifts to keep the transmission from shifting. If the climb gets really steep, you will hear the engine struggle. Just shift it down to a lower gear. When the engine sounds like it is running at above 4000 rpm then you will have to switch to a higher gear. If you do not tow ar carry heavy items, you should not use these gears. Just leave it in automatic when you drive about. I hope this helps.

those are low gears, used when you are towing something or trying to move in ice or mud without spinning your tires.
