Once the swelling is down enough that you can get in your skates I say tape it up and get out there.

If it is taped enough that your foot can't move it should be safe to get back on your skates.
I would also recommend to start doing some ankle strengthening exercises. This would include, but not limited to, getting a large band (like a large rubber-band) and hook it over your toes to do toe pulls, toes presses and then go to the side and go as far as you can without moving your leg at all.
I had this happen to me from playing volleyball and my trainer had me running on it in 3 days. I then continued the exercises for the rest of track season and never had a problem running anywhere.

Your dr. should have told you but I'd say after having tons of sports injuries, after the swelling goes down and the pain is manageable, keep it taped up for several weeks and go as long as you feel good. Don't push it. You know when the pain is too much and that is your body telling you to stop. Don't push too hard our you will be nursing that injury for life. I'd definitely give it a couple of weeks before hitting the ice again. I'd even stay off of it as much as I could the first week or so. Lay up and watch the comedy channel for a week and have your girl dote on you! Yeah! Good luck and God speed!

Ligaments are what binds bone to bone and tendons are what binds muscles to bone... In a sprain, you pull not only the muscles but also you stretch the ligaments and the tendons. As they have a minimal amount of blood supply, they take longer to heal than muscles do... and sometimes you can weaken the connection of their attachments so that in a second or third sprain to that same area... they will pull loose from their attachment and then surgery is required to put them back...
Sprains take longer to heal than a broken bone does... and so it is vital to keep this area secure during the healing process, but then to wear a support thereafter as that area will ALWAYS be weakened by the sprian and easier to a second or third sprain.
DO NOT be in a hurry... as a young person, you have a long time in life to need as healthy repair as you can achieve...for a lifetime of use of this part of your body. Take it from me... as I had to have surgery to repair the ligaments to my right shoulder... and my arm has never regained the full strength and function it had before the injury. Signed: A RN Nurse... and from personal experience...
