Actually I tend to agree with maslow's heirarchy of needs.
Unless you're independently wealthy, you won't work for free no matter how much you love the job.

Of course, it doesn't help to get paid well, enjoy your work, have good prospects for advancement as well. That would be an idea situation.

As a supervisor, I give my staff the same things that make me satisfied in my workplace: recognition, respect, the opportunity to give input on decisions that will impact them, being kept in the loop as far as what is going on in the company, and flexibility (I recognize that our personal lives do not stop just because we are at work, so there is room to make personal calls, deal with issues, etc as long as professionalism is maintained). This works for me, because my staff is cohesive, loyal , we all get along extremely well with each other and they give me 100%.
I read an article that stated money is not the most important factor to most people, but rather the things I stated above plus the opportunity to advance in the company.

Work HARDER? I work hard because I AM motivated. I work by the same principal as I would for anything else I do:

Do it the way it should be done the first time around.

Besides, I get payed for who I am, not for what I produce. How can I work harder? ;-)

Motivation comes from my personal desire to excel, no matter what the job is, provided the company acknowledges and respects me for it. And money is a great motivator as well!

I work hard for my company because I believe in the work they do. Sounds condescending I know, but I get to see people made mentally better every day. The financial compensation is not the best in the world, but the emotional rewards far outweigh them.

I am motivated by validation and praise more than money or benefits. I would rather have someone telling me that I do an excellent job. Money doesn't boost my self esteem.

For my own business, it's because I'm doing it for myself, it's my business. I work 20 hours a day at it, and never realize it, it doesn't bother me. Self motivation.

But working for someone else, as in a regular job, I can't stand to be their 8 hours.
