Normally the old dead sod is removed first. This is done by cutting squares in the sod then lifting the old sod up and cutting the roots so it comes up like a big mat. Then you place down your new sod. Or you can take a tiller and go to town with the tiller. Rake up all the old grass and dispose of it then lay down your new sod. Or there is yet one more method. Use a tractor and a grader box to rip up the old grass. Then you can smooth out the lawn with the graderbox and add new grass.

I listed the methods in order from how to do the smallest project to the largest project.

They do have kits to fix areas of sod, check your local Garden Center or Wal-mart, Lowe's and such. You can buy the Sod by little sections not the whole square That is just for small areas. If it is the whole yard then you have your work cut out for you. First the old dead sod has to come up as you prolly know. Then you will have to replant either with new sod or spread out some grass seed. Hope this helps

it will be very labor intensive to re sod your lawn as the old sod would have to come up I would have soil amendment put on the top of the dead grass to a level of 1/2 inch then reseed with a tall fescue that is recommended for your area. do not use kentucky 31
