It was launched on August 1, 1981, with the words "Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll," spoken on camera by John Lack, one of the creators of MTV. This introduction was immediately followed by the video clip "Video Killed the Radio Star," featuring a band called the Buggles.

I dont know about the "true MTV", but, I used to watch on channel 53, a lot of weird waves and colors that were in sequence to music way back in the 70s!
Channel 53, I believe was out of Youngstown ohio. at that time.
They didnt have regular programming as it was just getting started to broadcast and it was that way for maybe a year or two...(well, it was a long time, as in youth, everything was long, eh?).
I remember, because I used to sit in the kitchen and my mother would tell me to turn it off, all the time... There was never "music videos", just color sequences to music, so, to me, that was the first Music Television.
