I live in Sunderland too. We don't live in a state, we live in Tyne & Wear. A zip code is the equivalent to a post code and all post codes in Sunderland begin with SR.

I know what you mean. There are a lot of websites out there that will not let you go any further unless you put in a state (from a drop down box) and a Zip code (that has no similarity to the format of the british post code).

I do not say which is best (although I am biased and obvioulsy think the UK method ideal) but I do get frustrated by US companies that ignore everything outside of the 50 states.

I must say in the past I have fudged one at random and guessed a zip code.

A zip code is the American version of a postal code. A zip code is only five digits long so you might be unlucky with a site that won't allow you to put your postcode in. State is county for this purpose. City is city or town. If your address has a post town as well as a village, then the village is the second line of the main address and put the post town - the one you normally put in block capitals - as the city.

In England, there are no "states" there are counties, zip codes in the UK are called "postcodes"

Sunderland is in the county of Tyne & Wier.

Post codes are made up of two elements, usually broken up by a space (eg, SR1 3JH): the first two letters identify the region, the numbers identify the sub region, and the last three digits identify the area which usually only contains one or two houses.

First it's not a state, and it will not have a zip code, if however you are looking for the post code, then go to the royal mail web site and you will find it there.

State is not applicable in the UK. They are refered as Areas or counties. As 4 u're postcode (zip code in the US), u'd best goto a post office near u or a uk postal website 2 discover that. -))

In the uk we dont call them zip codes they are postcodes.

The code will be unique to which road you live in and also different sides of tghe street will have a different postcode as well.
