It means that blood ties (family, clan, etc) are more important than anything else!

It means that family's tighter together than friends. I'm not sure how the expression came along, but it's saying to stick with your family over others.

Garth Brooks has a song, "Blood is thicker than water, but love is thicker than blood." If you're confused, lol, its about a woman who's kids all had different fathers, but because they loved each other, it didn't matter. Love is more important :)

Hope this helps

My mom always said my dad was only related by mariage. I was blood.
btw. They get along great and are still maried, just to illustrate that even here blood is thicker than water.

The water part I always missed but thats supposed to represent the rest of the world I guess, just water.

What the people above said about ties between family (and therefore commitments and responsibilities) being tighter than ties between yourself and friends or strangers.

Interestingly, this appears to be genetically programmed into us. In other words, it is part of our universal human nature to chose friends over strangers, family over friends and immediate family over more distant kin and so on. Look for it "preference for own children and close kin (nepotism)" on the weblink below, which lists the universals of human nature as analysed by Brown through the examination of anthropological studies.

Family will be there, when you need them. They will (mostly) stand by you in thick and thin.

Friends come and go, and will turn on you if its appropriate for thier intentions and furtherance of thier agendas...

Most families wont let you down, (not counting dysfunctional families). When the chips are down, they will come running to your defence, and help you with anything they can.

Friends will drop you like a hot potato at the first sign of strife in your life. They dont want to be "bothered", hearing "your" stuff, when they got thier own troubles...

I wish you well..

Usually it means that if someone has to choose between friends or family, they will almost always choose family.
