The lecturers say:

1. Lecturers have been poorly paid for years
2. If you don't pay lecturers well you won't get good lecturers
3. Therefore give lecturers more pay.

This is illogical. If 1 and 2 are true, then there are no good lecturers. Therefore, if you give lecturers more pay, you simply get higher paid bad lecturers!

But being bad lecturers, they haven't realised this yet.

I have had lecturers answer queries on weekends and late at night, no teacher even offered this type of academic support. So lecturers (at least some) do more than teachers although I don't personally feel they should be paid a much higher rate.

Lecturing at higher education level is a world away from teaching. It is an entirely different discipline with a different workload. Lectureres must constantly research and write as well as read to keep up to date with changing theories and approaches to their chosen subject. I disagree to the huge pay rise they are demanding and think punishing the students is a morally wrong but I am unsure as to any other route to travel that would achieve results. I can see their point of view, HE is market driven now and the Universities are to reap the rewards why can't the tutors who are instrumental in recruiting and retaining the fee paying students have a piece of that pie?

I found that lecturers are much more helpful than my high school teachers. And they definitely know more. As far as I know, teachers are supposed to specialize in minimum of 2 fields. So those two fields can be something like math and english (two absolutely different things!). But lecturers tend to specialize in only one field. If they do specialize in 2 or more fields, than those fields are closely related (like math and physics). So I find that lecturers know their stuff better than teachers because they only have to worry about one field of study, and therefore do a better job at teacher than teachers do. So I think it's fair that they get paid more.
