The tax point for a continuous supply of services is when either a VAT invoice is issued, or a payment is received, whichever is the earlier.
You may be able to issue a 'request for payment,' and then issue a VAT invoice when you receive payment - this is reasonable and legal VAT planning.
More details are in the VAT Guide, Notice 700

If you can give me a more full question, I shall ask my husband as he works in VAT, helping companies pay less where possible.
