Genesis 1: 1 states: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."

This statement has never been disproven. Therefore the answer to your question is that the universe as we know it is a creation of God.

Just as a sidenote, if the theory of evolution was true, then why don't we have evidence of the continuation of evolution. Seen any talking monkeys lately? Fish coming out of the water and walking around on the shore? How about alligators and crocodiles? They have been the same for thousands of years...does that mean that they have evolved to a state of perfection? I dont think so.

Bottomline is "If you believe in a higher being, i.e. "God", then you have to believe His word. Otherwise it doesnt really matter does it?"

Have a great day!

The problem with some mystical religious doctrines and their parallel scientific theories is the notion of a something-out-of-nothing creation. This runs against the well-accepted and well-substantiated belief in conservation of energy and matter, thus making Nature into a rule-breaker and God into a magician. Because the dominant theories like the Big Bang Theory offer no explanation as to what happened before the origin of a universe with a given staring point in time, it allows such nonsensical and illogical beliefs to remain popular.

However, other theories involving string theories, Big Bounces, and so on, are based on a possible reorganization (rather than ex nihlo) creation of our universe. Those religious beliefs in a deity of consistent behavior and sciences based on conservation of matter and energy maintain their integrity under such concepts.

Unfortunately, comparatively little exposure has been given to such theories and doctrinal beliefs. Instead, wildly inconsistent stories of creation are generated from secular and sacred institutions. As more comprehensive organizational and cyclical theories are substantiated, many of our presently popular theories will be relegated to historical records containing more ancient mythologies.

Some scientists posit that the universe was brought into existence as matter from nonmatter, while other scientists argue that matter and energy must be conserved and therefore always existed in some form. Some religionists argue that God created the world and the universe out of nothing, but some religions do not accept this notion. The universe was not spoken into existence out of nothing, but may have been spoken into a reformation out of something.

Beh, after taking anthropology and microbiology, my hypothesis is it's always exists to some degree, but like everything else, gradually grew into what it all is now. I don't believe "god" had anything to do with it. I have an idea another set of intelligence was created way before us though and they are the reason we came apart. Like, Earth and the universe we see (which isn't damn much when you think about it) is just a small fraction of entire 'nother world that probably has lives. And organisms from there existance found a way to Earth and over time, evolution happened. Microorganisms are smart; they definately get more credit than the invisible man.

The statement "was the universe spoken into existence" is without meaning. It confuses two non-overlapping concepts (communication and creation).

In respect of the Judeo Christian bibles there are two statements on creation of the universe, both of which are easily shown false by observation.

The first: "In the beginning god created the heavens and the earth". Astronomical observation and dating of rocks on earth shows that some stars very substantially pre date the earth - by billions of years. Hence the two were not created or did not come into being at the same time.

The second: "In the beginning was the word" is, as above, a scientifically meaningless statement.

The problem is you can never expect to receive a scientific seal of approval on the Bible. I happen to believe the Bible and therefore I believe that as time goes on more and more truths from the Bible will be verified scientifically but certainly not all. When the Bible says And the Lord said "Let there be light" and there was light, that makes no sense to a scientist because that omnipotent, omnicient, God that we believe in transcends science. Think about it. If God could be truly understood by scientists that would make HIM yet another species under their observation to be studied, categorized, experimented with, and possibly even duplicated. No matter how intelligent man thinks he is, his mind can not comprehend God. It is a matter of faith and of spirit. I believe there was a "big bang" and I believe God caused it.

Neither theory has been 'proven' or 'disproved'. Just because something has not been disproven, does not, unfortunately, make it fact.
As for evolution, that takes a little more than 'thousands' of years lol. (One also has to take into account human influence -how many species have we made extinct!?)But there is evidence of it happening. Look at monkeys for instance. They, in one continent, started using simple tools(amazing in itself)then it was discovered in another, separate continent different monkeys using similar tools. Also, you can look at the evolution of viruses. (Bird Flu, to be topical)
For me, there is more evidence to suggest the non existence of a god than there is to prove it. I have been a christian and read the bible cover to cover on numerous occasions, even now, for reference sometimes.

This question has confounded some of the greatest scholars that have existed in human history. I therefore think it is pretty unlikely that you will find the correct answer here on Yahoo! Answers.

why does it have to be one or the other? why can't the scientific method reflect the process god created? either way it's an instantaneous event: big bang vs "let there be light"
