I'm looking to find information about any cities that have played a key role in changing the world we live in today.

Ideally, I'd like to know which city, what part they played, and any other interesting facts.

I think London as most of the decision making to explore other continents would have been taken by Parliament or the King or Queen of the time.

Rome. The Roman empire changed the ancient world. The system of government, the formation of roads and aquaducts and the rise of the Roman Catholic church are all part of Rome's legacy.

Berlin. The division of East and West illustrated the Cold War, and the fall of the Berlin Wall was a watershed moment in modern history.

Jeruselem. The constant conflict between Israel and Palestine show the rest of the world how profound religious conflict can be.

New York City. The city rules the global economy, and the terrorist attacks have changed the global landscape. The world has changed greatly in the last five years because of what happened in New York.

London during the Victorian Era as they where instrumental in bring about huge changes in industry.
The train network was the one example allowing people to move around the country, the underground system, the sewerage system, bringing electricity to homes.

Even Queen Victoria she was the first person to have an epidural in child birth.

Then if you think back to the roman empire they also had a huge effect on a lot of the world, under floor heating, baths, roads and many other things so I think Rome deserves a mention.

Look back through history and you will find great civilisations that where responsible for changing cities, vast cultures that made things possible and had the foundations placed for the next civilisation to work with and improve.

What about Alexander the Great one very powerful man who has been right across continents!

Over the last 5 years, New York City has changed the world.

The US has started two wars and the world isn't the same place because of the events there on September 11, 2001.

i will consider the fields if change and i will choose the cities as follows:
1- religions, macca in Saudi Arabia and the birth- town of Christ in Palestine because either Islamic or Christian religion have more than billion followers now.
2- knowledge, ancient Greek cities for the propagency of philosophy, mathematics and so on.
3- changing an expected event ; saint betersburg(Stalingrad) in russia, because the city prevented the expected dominance of nazi upon the east. pearl harbour because the japanese attack persuaded u.s. to join england, france to change their front into the strongest front in the second war. Heroshima and nagazaki because their destruction by the atomic bombs changed japan from constructing a Japanese emperor in Asia and pacific, so, allowing china to succeed the throne.
4- current events, new york, since it is the home of the administration of the united nations which sometimes take deciding decisions which may induce changes elsewhere

Los Alamos,NM (along with the sister cities of Oak Ridge and Hanford): site of the development of the first nuclear device. On July 16, 1945 the world changed with the explosion of the first atomic bomb. The explosion took place at Trinity Site which is on what is now White Sands Missile Range. Every world decision and policy (militarily and politically) was changed after that date.
