Well, actually it's only a "candle" in the broadest sense. Actually, it's a stip of fabric or (less comonly) paper that's been soaked in some type of wax. The fabric is rolled into a tight cone shape and allowed to harden.

Then the cone is inserted (small end first) into the ear and the large end is lit. The candle is allowed to burn down to within a couple of inches of the ear and then the flame is extinguished.

This entire idea has been completely debunked and you can see a great demo of that in the link below but I like to tell people to think about it this way: Even if it DID work, any vacuum strong enough to "pull" toxins and wax out of your ear would be strong enough to damage your eardrum, right?

Ear candling is a service where a hollow candle is placed in the ear. Supposedly the heat from the candle draws impurities out of the ear canal. In reality it is only the wax from the candle dripping into the ear canal. To produce enough suction to draw wax out of the ear it would actually rupture your ear drum. Please don't fall for these claims as it can be very dangerous. If it actually worked, don't you think ear, nose and throat doctors would be doing it?

A hollow candle i placed in the ear and lit. The heat rises and sucks the junk out of your ear through the hollow part of the candle. It can work a little but I wouldn't do it.

Ear candling is somewhat helpful if you believe in all types of treatment, but I reccomend that you purge your ears with 50% water and 50% Peroxide to insure that they stay clean and it does remove wax.

That is my home remedy and I have no problems at all. We must clean our eardrums oput to prevent infections.
