This is known as the diesel cycle, after German engineer Rudolf Diesel, who invented it in 1892 based on the hot bulb engine and received the patent on February 23, 1893. Diesel intended the engine to use a variety of fuels including coal dust.

Maybe you should say "Who invented the diesel engine?" rather than discovered. I don't think one just materialised out of nowhere for someone to discover.

it was invented by Rudolf Diesel in 1862. when he first displayed it at a trade show, he ran it on peanut oil. everyone came to see it because they thought it was a cooking show.
