There is always a risk of sepsis after a surgical procedure. But this one carries little risk. Since the surgey takes place in a aspetic environment, infection would happen during recovery. This would only happen if your stiches come apart before healing has finished. But you should be given antibiotics after a surgical procedure like that anyway.

I can tell you from experience with a patient that had this surgery, be very careful. You must follow your doctors orders and watch for the first sign and symptom of infection. If it does get infected, it will take a long time to heal because of the proximity of the wound. Also, if you have to go to a wound care center afterward, be sure the attendants there are following precautions so that you do not get an infection. Just ask or have a conference with the Infection control Nurse. Good luck.

generally, cutting the skin under perfect conditions, and sewing it together will cause an infection in as many as 1%.

The foot is filthy, patients almost always are braced to maintain tendon length... this is filthy.

The incision in on the back of the leg, hard to see... little things go unnoticed and flourish into bigger infections.

Overall, foot surgery, almost 8% infection rate.

Few series published for this surgery in particular, but seems a bit lower in the 2-3% range. Hope that helped.
