I know we all know that we know that the only right answer is to stop and help the old man. I think that most of this in this situation would just keep going and got to the aiport.
Hopefully your lover would have a cell phone you could reach them on. If they didn't, then you know it wasn't meant to be. Hopefully, you would have the guts to do the right thing.
If that where to happen, I would imediatley stop the car, and get out and pick up the dog. I would tell the man to get in my car and tell him to hold his dog, I would then rush to the nearest animal hospital to save the dog, I would be willing to pay for all the bills, and I would also pay for any other expensives I had cost them.
As of stopping the one I love from leaving, I would some how get a hold of him and if I didn't, I would have people that would be there to comfort me with my pain. Trying to save the dog, would be more important than my personal life. I made a mistake that I had to fix, that would be the first thing I would take care of.

Get your priorities right ;
STOP:
Apologise to the elderly man and get him to sit quietly inside your car, .,
He may need medical help, .he could be in shock, from the trauma of seeing his dog run over .
Then check if the dog is badly injured
( he may need to be taken to a vet in a hurry )
Can you contact your girlfriend, on the mobile phone, to tell her what you are doing ?
If your girlfriend really loves you, she will return to you,
if she does not, there is nothing else that you can do .
I am sure you will take this route .

First of all you have to get rid of the evidence so what i might do is pick up the little poor doggy and take him to my local taxidermist for a good stuffing and luckily my loverly lady who i am in love with and on my way to save loves stuffed animals and i treat her every year at christmas to a new kind of dog, she goes crazy for the big dogs you know...So what i would do with the old man is use my magic watch (like you know that kids programme arthurs watch where he can stop time??) Well I would do that and stop time for eternity (not technically killing him too) and get him stuffed aswell so that they can live happily ever after together forever very still...(what an anti-climatic end.)

wow, man i hit the dog?? i would stop and see if i killed it. would probably end up crying with the old guy if i did. can you call 911 for an animal? if it did die, i would see if i could find another companion for the man. how sad.

I would stop and deal with the dog, it might not be dead, just injured. It's obviously my own stupid fault for not begging my 'true love' to stay in the first place!

I would stop and give him my business card, then arrange to meet up with him later to pay the vet bill, that would not take more than 30 seconds.

I would stop and probably freak out and start crying. I am a very big animal lover and I can't handle hurting things.
