Well, football is a very simple way and this is how it works. (for easier explanation purposes lets say we have team A and team B)
start of the game: at the beginning of the game, the team that begins with the ball is decided by chance ( flipping a coin) and the team that gets the ball starts the game from the middle of the field.
scoring: when more than 50% of the ball goes through the goal line (or goal) of team's A goal([the little house with a net on it which are on both sides of the field]), no matter who pushed the ball in, team B gets one point (sometimes it is one the team A's members that pushed the ball in accidentally but team B still gets the point).
out: just like in many other games there is also an out is football. The "out" occurs when the ball gets out of the field (the football field is surrounded by a white line) and if a member of team A was the last to touch the ball before it left the field them team B gets the ball.
fouls, yellow and red cards: if a member of either team at any time tries to injure a member of the opposite time, then the referee will show a yellow card and if the action is repeated by the same member then the referee will show a red card and that member is out of the game.
corner kick: it is very similar to an out. It occurs when the ball gets out of the field on the side of team A's goal and the last to touch the ball was a member of team A, in which case team B gets the ball and a member of team B gets to kick the ball from the corner on the side on which the ball got out of the field.
well, there are actually many more rules but these are the most basic ones and they will help you undrstand the game and as you watch more football, you will learn about the rest of the rules.
good luck and dont miss today's game its Germany vs. Costa Rica. I hope you enjoy.

There is a group stage involving 4 teams - a league stage. The top 2 in that league after they all play each other goes through to the next round. It's all about winning games rather than the number of goals you score.

The first round is a group stage - 32 teams split into 8 leagues of four teams.
Within each group each team plays eachother once - you get 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, and 0 if you lose.
The winner and runner up from each group go into a knockout phase where the winner of each game progresses further until the final.
There is also a playoff between the two losing semi-finalists to decide third and fourth place.

the first round has 32 teams split into 8 groups of 4 each. in this stage(league stage) each team plays the other 3 once. points are given accordingly: win=3, draw=1, lose=0. two teams qualify for the next round on the basis of maximum points. if there is a tie in points thats when the no. of goals come in. (goal difference= goals scored - goals conceded) the team with greater goal difference is considered better.
in the next stage(knockout stage) teams are pitted against each other in a particular system which u'll get to know if u look into a newspaper coz almost every newspapers publishing it.
here the winning team goes thru to the next round and finally the team that manages to keep winning is crowned WORLD CHAMPIONS!
