I've never heard of this. There's no reason why this would be dangerous. Diet soda and regular soda are almost exactly the same in recipe except for the fact that diet soda uses a sugar substitute instead of a natural sweetener like corn syrup or glucose/sucrose syrup. People often mix liquor with soda in mixed drinks. If you are talking about the effects of caffeine vs. ethyl alcohol (the chemical compound found in alcoholic beverages), the effects of the alcohol would overpower any effect the caffeine would have.

I don't know who told you that but it's not true, I drink gin with diet tonic and am still alive and well.
