Digital SLRs are great and add another dimension to photography, but film provides another level of artistry. I am disturbed with Canon and Nikon's decision to stop film camer production and Kodak has started to pull out of the film market. Is there an immediate end to film coming soon or can I continue to enjoy the best of both worlds?

For quite a while yet...Many professional photographers still find the clarity of their photos are better with film cameras. Quality is rapidly catching up with newer digital versions...but, a Pro with Thousands of $$$ invested in his equipment will keep using it. ( Many own a digital camera as well...but don't use it for commercial shoots. )

There will never be an end to film. A lot of people still have this false belief that film is better than digital and will always be like that. There are tons of professionals out there who will never switch to digital. As long as there is that high percentage, you'll always be able to walk down to your local CVS and purchase a roll of 24exp film.

I also believe that colleges will always continue to teach film based classes as it's easier to teach a person how to use a film SLR instead of a Digital SLR (and cheaper too).

I really hope that film remains an avalable medium for photography. Digital might be easier, but film has a lot better quality. If film does get pulled from the market I'm sure some people will stock up (like my photo teacher) and it will probably be available through internet/ebay.

audio compact discs first appeared commercially in 1982/3. most people agreed that you would no longer be able to buy vinyl records by 1990.

a tiny number of people (including myself) were less convinced. vinyl is harder to store, more difficult to handle, and enormously more difficult to play - but it sounds better.

until cd reproduction is actually better than vinyl there will be a small but viable audiophile market for vinyl.

digital slrs are not in the same league as analogue film yet. emulsion film will become a niche market fairly rapidly over the next ten years - but as long as people need quality which digital cannot deliver there will be ways to buy emulsion film.

Film is not coming to an end anytime soon. There are companies who make film for cameras from the 1950's. Film use will decrease, but by no means will it end.

For a long time, in film, billions of atoms are being affected by light. Digitals can only go to a few million pixels. Years to go before there are as many pixels as atoms.

You will enjoy for a long time, but probably only expensive, professional models. I also enjoy film better than digital, and also film better than video.

The technology might be getting old, but it is still very useful for commercial and professional productions. So I am sure it will not disappear for a long time.

i think that it will still be available for a while. digital cameras just cant do what film cameras can, and as a result till it can they'll keep film.
